Agave potatorum 'Ouhi-Raijin' Variegata compresses spoon-shaped leaves striped in cream and grey-green into a tiny, symmetrical rosette that often looks almost bonsai-like in a shallow pot. Mature plants usually remain very small, often around 5â7 cm tall and 9â12 cm wide, but the compact scale only makes the contrast and shape more noticeable.
This Japanese cultivar descends from the dry-land agave group associated with southern Mexico and responds best to very bright light, a gritty, mineral-rich substrate, and long dry intervals between waterings.
Variegated tissue can blush pink or red in stronger light, but it remains slower and more deliberate than greener agaves. Repot sparingly, avoid stale moisture around the base, and separate offsets only once they are properly rooted. As with other agaves, sap may irritate skin and the spined leaves are not suited to homes with curious pets or children at hand level.
