Aglaonema commutatum is the species behind countless Chinese evergreen cultivars, and on its own it already offers sturdy, patterned green leaves, a bushy upright habit, and real adaptability to indoor life. Depending on the form, it usually reaches about 30–80 cm indoors, making it useful on desks, shelves, or as a modest floor plant.
The species comes from tropical Southeast Asian forests, especially the Philippines, where it grows under filtered light, in warmth, and in moisture-retentive but draining forest soils. That background explains why it tolerates lower light better than many houseplants while still preferring bright filtered conditions for strongest growth. Water once the upper layer of substrate has dried, keep the mix airy with perlite or bark, and avoid cold drafts or standing water around the roots.
It is toxic if chewed because of calcium oxalate, but as a baseline foliage species it remains one of the most dependable true aroids for indoor cultivation.
