Alocasia portei is one of the most dramatic species in genus, eventually forming a trunk and carrying deeply lobed, almost palm-like leaves that can make it look more like rainforest architecture than a houseplant. Even indoors it can become very large, so it belongs in conservatories, atriums, or rooms where vertical scale is welcome. Foliage is strongly divided, petioles are mottled, and mature plants develop a silhouette unlike ordinary elephant ears.
Bright indirect light, rich but airy substrate, high humidity, and regular feeding are all important if you want the species to push the oversized leaves it is known for. Because the plant builds mass, stability and warmth matter as much as moisture. It is a species for collectors who want a monumental aroid.
