Amorphophallus atroviridis is a tuberous aroid that usually produces one large dark velvety leaf per growth cycle, edged in bright pink and carried on a mottled petiole. The leaf stage stays fairly compact at around 30–50 cm, but the colour contrast and unusual seasonal rhythm make it feel far more dramatic than its size suggests.
During active growth it wants bright filtered light, even moisture in an airy organic mix, warm temperatures around 20–28 °C, and higher humidity. After the leaf yellows and dies back, dormancy is normal rather than a problem, and watering should be reduced sharply until a new sprout appears. Some plants may also flower before leaf growth.
Success depends less on constant intervention than on understanding the switch between active growth and dry rest, while remembering the tuber and tissues contain calcium oxalate.
