Begonia masoniana 'Iron Cross' is recognised immediately by its puckered pale green leaves stamped with a dark central cross, a pattern made even stronger by fine hairs and a slightly glossy surface. It grows from rhizomes into compact clumps, so the foliage sits low and concentrated rather than being spread along long canes or climbing stems.
Bright shade and high humidity keep the surface healthy, while an airy organic substrate allows steady moisture without turning the rhizomes soft. Let only the upper layer dry slightly between waterings, avoid direct sun and cold drafts, and remove old leaves before they collapse across the crown. Small greenish-white flowers can appear, but the plant is grown for leaf pattern and texture first. Few begonias are as instantly identifiable, which is why this cultivar remains a classic even among much newer foliage introductions.
