Caryota mitis is a clustering palm with slender, bamboo-like stems and large bipinnate fronds whose jagged leaflets give it the distinct fishtail look. Indoors it can reach around 2–3 m over time, building a dense vertical screen rather than a single trunk, and it performs best where light is bright but filtered, humidity stays high, and the substrate remains evenly moist without turning stagnant.
A deep pot with drainage, a chunky mix with coir, bark, and perlite, and temperatures around 18–26 °C suit it well. Brown tips often point to dry air or salt buildup, while yellowing can suggest watering or feeding issues.
The fruits contain calcium oxalate, so this is a foliage palm to place carefully around pets and children rather than treat as fully harmless.
