Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana ‘Hottentot’ turns stacked succulent leaves into something close to jewellery, wrapping small rounded foliage around each stem until the plant looks like chains of beads. Young growth stays upright, but with time the stems arch and trail, which makes the plant especially good for bowls, shelves, and hanging edges where the structure can spill naturally. In bright light the margins can flush red, adding even more detail.
This is a succulent that rewards restraint. Give ‘Hottentot’ strong light, a very free-draining mix, and full drying between waterings, especially once temperatures fall. Wide shallow pots suit the root system better than deep containers, and too much moisture ruins the effect quickly. Grown hard and bright, Crassula ‘Hottentot’ becomes a compact living sculpture with almost no maintenance burden.
