Fern Soil Mix

Fern Soil Mix is intended for ferns that dislike dry spells. Combine it with careful watering and good humidity for best results.

• When to repot: repot when the root ball is dense, roots circle the pot or the old mix has compacted and no longer absorbs water well.
• Preparing the plant: gently remove as much old substrate as possible, then rinse the roots under lukewarm water to clear remaining particles.
• Trimming: cut away dead or browning fronds and obviously rotten roots with clean scissors before potting into fresh mix.
• Planting: add a thin base layer of Fern Soil Mix, set the fern in the centre, spread the roots and backfill around them, keeping the root crown just below the surface.
• Settling the soil: lightly pat the mix to stabilise the plant without compacting it; water thoroughly so the substrate settles around the roots and air pockets close.
• Watering rhythm: aim for consistently moist but never swampy – the mix should feel slightly damp when checked with a finger, not dry and not saturated.
• Humidity: ferns respond well to higher ambient humidity; grouping plants or using a humidifier is usually more effective than heavy daily misting.
• Optional bottom watering: occasional bottom watering in a shallow tray can help rehydrate a pot evenly; always remove excess water afterwards so roots do not sit in it long term.
