Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, bottle palm, is one of the few palms grown mainly for trunk shape rather than sheer foliage. Young plants show a swollen base that narrows above into the familiar bottle form, topped by a compact crown of arching feather leaves and a clear green crownshaft. Indoors it needs real light to stay convincing, so it is best treated as a long-term specimen for bright rooms, sunrooms, or conservatories rather than a palm for dim corners.
A free-draining mix, warm temperatures year-round, and careful watering that allows the upper mix to dry between rounds are essential, because cold wet roots are the main risk.
Growth is slow enough for container culture over many years, though the dramatic bottle shape softens somewhat as the trunk elongates with age. Bottle palm works best when given visual space and strong light.
