Massonia pustulata is a winter-growing South African bulb that stays low to the soil, producing two broad opposite leaves covered in raised pustules and, in season, a tight central cluster of cream to white flowers. Its whole growth pattern differs from most indoor plants: active growth happens in the cooler, wetter months, while summer is a dry dormancy period that the bulb needs in order to stay sound. During active growth, give it bright light, cool to mild temperatures around 10–20 °C, and a mineral-rich, fast-draining mix that can be watered regularly without staying wet.
When dormancy begins, keep it dry to avoid rot. For collectors of geophytes and odd morphology, it offers texture, seasonality, and a very distinctive silhouette in a small footprint.
