Musa 'Siam Ruby' delivers colour on a scale most foliage plants cannot even approach, sending up large leaves washed in deep ruby tones and spattered with lime green so the whole plant glows when backlit. Unlike subtler variegated bananas, this one reads bold from across a room or garden, which is why it works best where it has space and strong light to show off properly.
It grows quickly in warmth and with regular moisture, and like most bananas it rewards feeding generously rather than sparingly. Indoors it needs the brightest position available to avoid dulling out, while outdoors it excels in warm, sheltered summer conditions. The plant is not delicate, but it is hungry and thirsty compared with most houseplants.
For growers who want unapologetic tropical colour and a fast-moving focal plant, 'Siam Ruby' delivers exactly that.
