Pine Bark: Quick Overview
Pine Bark is a chunky substrate component used to improve drainage, airflow, and long-term structure in potting mixes for orchids, aroids, hoyas, and other root-sensitive plants. The coarse pieces create air channels through the substrate, helping roots grow through a looser framework rather than dense, compacted soil. At the same time, the bark surface holds some moisture without trapping excess water around the roots for too long, which is why it is useful in mixes for epiphytes and semi-epiphytes. Because it breaks down more slowly than many finer organic ingredients, it also helps keep the mix open over a longer period. Pine Bark can be used as a major component or as one part of a custom blend with materials such as perlite, coir, or mineral fractions.
