Philodendron mexicanum at a glance:
Philodendron mexicanum is a fast-growing climber from southern Mexico with glossy hastate leaves and striking maroon undersides that stay noticeable even when the plant is viewed from below or against the light. That colour contrast is one of its strongest features, and it becomes more dramatic once the vine is allowed to climb instead of sprawl. Indoors it can exceed 1.5 m on support while remaining slimmer than many other statement philodendrons.
Bright, indirect light supports stronger growth without damaging the foliage, and watering after the top 10–15% of substrate has dried keeps the root zone from staying too wet. It prefers temperatures around 18–27 °C, humidity above 60%, and an airy bark-and-coir mix with good drainage.
Like other philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalate and should not be chewed by pets or children.
