Stephania pierrei is a caudiciform vine grown mainly for its rounded woody caudex and the seasonal contrast between bare sculptural base and soft climbing foliage. Each growth cycle begins with slender stems emerging from the exposed caudex, carrying circular peltate leaves that can be trained around hoops or supports for a bonsai-like effect. It has a marked dormancy, so part of its appeal lies in that seasonal rhythm rather than constant greenery.
Bright indirect light, mineral-rich drainage, careful watering during growth, and near dryness in dormancy are key to long-term success. For growers who enjoy caudex plants and the idea of a living object that changes dramatically through the year, Stephania pierrei is deeply fascinating.
