Terrarium Substrate Mix

Use Terrarium Mix as the main soil layer above a drainage layer in closed and semi-closed setups.

• Create a drainage layer: add a base layer of clay balls or lava rock at the bottom of the container to hold excess water.
• Add a barrier (optional but helpful): separate drainage and soil with a breathable mesh to keep fine particles out of the drainage layer.
• Spread the Terrarium Mix: add at least 5 cm of substrate so roots can anchor and microfauna can move freely.
• Introduce microfauna: add springtails and isopods so they can break down waste and help control mould.
• Plant suitable species: choose ferns, mosses, small orchids and creeping plants that appreciate stable humidity.
• Water and monitor: moisten the mix thoroughly at setup, then adjust watering frequency based on condensation and plant response.
• Humidity control: if the terrarium stays too wet, increase ventilation or allow the surface to dry slightly between misting; if it dries too fast, reduce airflow or mist more frequently.
• Cleaning and long-term care: spot-clean fallen leaves and monitor for excessive mould; healthy microfauna and activated carbon help keep the system stable.

• Bioactive? Yes – suitable for springtails, isopods and other decomposers in bioactive enclosures.
• Safe for animals? Generally yes for isopods, springtails and many reptiles and amphibians; always check species-specific requirements and avoid ingestion.
