Theobroma cacao is a compact tropical tree grown as much for its botanical character as for its link to chocolate, with glossy leaves that often emerge reddish before deepening to green and a naturally slender habit suited to bright indoor spaces. One of its most unusual traits is cauliflory, meaning small flowers can form directly on the trunk and older branches, later developing into elongated pods if conditions are strong enough.
It prefers warm temperatures around 20 – 30 °C, high humidity, regular watering with slight drying at the surface, and a loose, organic, well-draining soil that stays evenly moist without turning heavy or waterlogged. Stable warmth, filtered light, and protection from drafts are key to keeping growth steady and leaf edges clean.
