Zingiber malaysianum 'Chocolate' forms a tidy clump of upright stems carrying long lance-shaped leaves in deep burgundy to chocolate-brown tones, an unusual colour range for an indoor ginger. It usually stays around 40–60 cm tall and wide, so it delivers rich tropical foliage without taking over a room.
Warmth, high humidity, and steady moisture are key: keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged, use an organic-rich yet draining mix, and avoid cold drafts or abrupt temperature change. Bright indirect light or light shade keeps the foliage attractive without scorching it. Growth comes from fleshy rhizomes, which can be divided when mature, and while basal cone-like blooms are possible, the main value indoors is the leaf colour, compact clumping habit, and pet-safe nature reported for this species.
