Ctenanthe burle-marxii is a low, spreading prayer plant with oval leaves marked in dark fishbone patterning over a grey-green base and rich purple undersides. It gives plenty of movement for its size, lifting and folding the foliage from day to night, and it develops into a broad clump that works beautifully in shallow planters, grouped tropical displays, and humid shelves. Compared with taller Marantaceae, it is easier to position and reads fuller sooner, which is part of why it remains such a useful indoor foliage plant.
Stable warmth, evenly moist but airy substrate, soft water, and good humidity keep the markings sharp and the leaves supple, while dry air, hard water, and erratic watering are the quickest route to tired edges and drooping growth.
