Agave potatorum f. compacta distils butterfly agave into a dense, hand-sized rosette of blue-green leaves lined with reddish teeth and tipped with darker spines. Even though it stays small, usually around 15–25 cm tall and wide, it still carries the crisp structure and strong silhouette that make potatorum forms so collectible.
The species comes from rocky slopes in Oaxaca and Puebla, and this compact form keeps the same need for full brightness, a very free-draining mineral substrate, and complete drying between thorough waterings. Growth is slow and long-lived, with the rosette eventually flowering only once after many years, then offsetting to continue the line. It performs best in a snug pot, preferably terracotta, where roots dry evenly.
Handle with care during repotting or cleanup, because the spines are sharp and the sap can irritate skin, especially on a plant this compact where every leaf is close to the next.
