Agave salmiana var. ferox grows into a massive, urn-shaped rosette of broad, blue-green leaves armed with formidable spines that can reach several centimetres long. Even in containers it can become 1–2 m wide with time, while outdoor plants in warm climates grow far larger, so it is best treated as a serious specimen rather than a shelf succulent.
Strong sun or the brightest possible indoor light is essential to keep the leaves firm, while a sharply draining cactus mix and infrequent deep watering protect the thick root zone from rot. It thrives in dry air, resents prolonged cold, and takes many years to flower once, sending up an enormous inflorescence before the main rosette dies. Offsets are the usual continuation of the plant. Because of the immense size, fierce armature, and irritating sap, this is a plant for large containers and bold spaces where accidental contact can be minimized.
