Agave stricta forms a near-perfect sphere of fine, rigid, sharply pointed leaves, giving it the look of a green sea urchin or tightly packed hedgehog in a pot. Indoors it usually stays around 50 cm tall and wide, and its very slow growth means the geometric form remains stable for years without constant repotting or pruning. Native to arid parts of southern Mexico, it wants intense light, excellent air circulation, and a gritty, fast-draining mix that dries completely between thorough waterings.
Unlike offsetting clump-formers, it usually stays as a solitary rosette, flowering only once after many years. Ordinary indoor humidity is fine, but persistent dampness around the roots quickly leads to decline. Sharp tips make handling awkward despite the compact size, so it is better treated as a design specimen for bright, protected spots rather than as a casual tabletop plant.
