Alluaudia procera looks almost prehistoric in a pot, building stiff green columns lined with stout spines and flicking out small paired leaves when warmth and strong light are on point. In nature it can become a tall tree-like presence in Madagascar’s spiny forests, but indoors it grows much more slowly, usually as a vertical, architectural succulent that can still reach 1–3 m over many years if given enough light and space. The species is deciduous in dry phases, so temporary leaf loss is normal and not a sign that the plant is failing.
Use a very mineral, sharply draining mix, water deeply but sparingly, and cut moisture back hard during leafless or slower phases. Full sun or maximum indoor brightness is essential, as is protection from cold below about 12 °C.
It is not toxic in the usual Euphorbia sense, but the spines make it unsuitable for tight walkways or homes where curious pets or children can reach it easily.
