Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘Flying Squid’ is a mutation grown for its bizarre silhouette rather than conventional foliage, sending up long tentacle-like petioles topped by tiny flared tips instead of full broad blades. Because the leaves are so reduced, the whole plant feels animated and strange in a way no normal elephant ear does. It stays dwarf and compact compared with the species, which makes the odd form easier to appreciate at close range on a shelf or plant stand.
Bright indirect light keeps the petioles upright, while warm conditions and lightly moist, airy substrate help the rhizome stay active. Do not mistake the tiny leaf tips for a care problem; they are the defining genetic feature. High humidity and careful watering keep the mutation looking crisp rather than dried or weakened.
