Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' combines elongated, arrow-shaped leaves with glossy petioles in deep maroon to near-black tones, giving this Philippine cultivar a much moodier look than the striped species form. It grows as an upright, clumping plant from a small corm and usually reaches about 40–60 cm indoors, though it can become larger in very warm, humid conditions.
Bright, indirect light, evenly moist but airy substrate, temperatures around 18–27 °C, and humidity between roughly 60 and 80% help it hold its shape and colour. Use a chunky aroid mix, water when the top layer begins to dry, and keep it away from cold drafts.
Like other Alocasia, it contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept out of reach of pets and children. Semi-hydro can also suit it well.
