Cyphostemma juttae is grown for the bottle trunk first and the leaves second, which is exactly why it stands apart from ordinary caudiciform succulents. In active growth it sends up a crown of broad, serrated blue-green leaves that soften the plant for a season, then it drops them and leaves behind a peeling, swollen stem that looks more like a desert sculpture than a conventional potted specimen. That seasonal switch is part of its appeal, because the plant never depends on foliage alone to carry its presence.
Strong light, heat, a sharply draining mineral mix, sparse but deep watering in active growth, and a dry rest during dormancy are what gradually build the caudex into the thick, commanding form collectors actually want.
