Ficus microcarpa 'Compacta' is the dense, bonsai-friendly fig chosen when a grower wants a small-leaved canopy and a tree-like silhouette without waiting decades for character. It responds well to pruning, branch shaping, and container culture, which is why it works as bonsai, semi-bonsai, or simply as a compact evergreen indoor tree with a rounded crown. The glossy foliage stays neat and presentable when the plant is comfortable, making it a very practical long-term structure plant.
Bright light, evenly moist but well-drained substrate, warmth, and stable conditions keep it thickly foliated and responsive to training, while low light, constant wetness, or abrupt environmental shifts usually show up fast as leaf drop and weaker growth.
