Hoya retusa grows as a fine trailing epiphyte with flat, blade-like leaves around 4–6 cm long, each leaf ending in a tiny notch that gives the species its name. Instead of broad succulent foliage, it makes a soft, wispy curtain more like Rhipsalis than a typical Hoya, which is why it works so well in hanging pots and airy interiors.
Bright indirect light, a loose bark-based mix, and partial drying between waterings suit it best. Humidity above 60% helps, but it adapts reasonably well if airflow is good and roots are never kept soggy. Mature plants can also produce small white flowers with fuzzy petals and deep pink centres, lightly fragrant and delicate rather than flashy.
