Araucaria heterophylla, often sold as Norfolk Island Pine, forms clean horizontal tiers of soft feathery branches around a single upright trunk, creating a symmetrical indoor conifer shape that looks structured without feeling harsh. In containers it grows slowly, often reaching about 1.5–2 m over several years, and works best where the air stays moderately humid and the light is bright but filtered.
Keep the soil lightly moist rather than saturated, use a free-draining mix with some organic body, and avoid letting the root ball dry hard or remain sodden for long periods. It dislikes frequent relocation, hot dry drafts, and damage to the central leader, which should never be cut if you want to preserve the natural form. Despite the look, it is not a true pine.
