Opuntia ficus-indica is a large shrubby to tree-forming cactus made of broad flattened pads that store water, branch freely, and can eventually carry yellow to orange flowers and edible fruits. It is one of the most important cultivated cacti in human history, valued both for ornamental structure and for pads and fruit used as food. In containers it stays smaller than wild plants but still develops a woody base and a strong desert silhouette over time.
Full sun, a mineral-rich fast-draining mix, and deep watering only after the substrate has dried completely are the essentials; prolonged wetness is the main risk. Spines and fine glochids can irritate skin, so handling should always be careful. It suits growers who want a cactus with real horticultural and agricultural history.
