Pachypodium lamerei is a succulent tree from Madagascar with a thick spiny silver-grey trunk topped by a crown of long narrow leaves, which explains why it is sold as Madagascar Palm despite having nothing to do with true palms. Indoors it usually reaches about 1.2–1.8 m, staying much smaller than wild plants but still offering a strong upright silhouette.
The trunk stores water, so the plant is far more tolerant of missed watering than of soggy soil, and it performs best in direct sun or the brightest window available. Use a fast-draining cactus mix, water only when the substrate is fully dry, and keep temperatures warm, ideally around 18–30 °C. Some leaf drop in cooler darker periods is normal. Sharp spines mean positioning and handling should always be deliberate.
