Philodendron melanochrysum is a classic velvet climber with long heart-shaped leaves that open bronze or copper and then darken to deep green with a golden cast along the veins. It is not just a pretty juvenile plant: once it is fixed to a tall damp pole, leaf size increases dramatically and mature foliage can exceed a metre indoors. The species wants support, not a hanging basket, because vertical growth is what unlocks its real form.
Bright, indirect light, watering after the top 3–5 cm of substrate has dried, and a chunky bark-and-coir mix all help prevent the root rot and stalled growth that happen when it is grown too wet. It prefers 18–26 °C and humidity around or above 70%.
Like other philodendrons, it is toxic if ingested and best kept away from pets and children.
