Piper nigrum variegata is a decorative form of black pepper grown mainly for its glossy green leaves splashed in cream rather than for spice production. The variegation appears irregular and painterly, and because the plant is naturally a vine it benefits from a trellis, moss pole, or other support that lets the patterned foliage climb instead of sprawling. Indoors it can reach around 2 m with time, though it remains manageable if trimmed and kept in a suitable pot.
Bright, indirect light helps preserve the contrast, while a few hours of gentle morning sun are usually acceptable if the plant is acclimated. Keep the substrate slightly moist but never soggy, use a loose mix with bark, perlite, and compost, and maintain warmth plus humidity above average.
Fruiting is possible in ideal conditions, but the variegated foliage is the real reason to grow it indoors.
