Piper veraguense, also circulated as Piper albert-smithii, is a rarely seen foliage Piper with matte dark leaves and an unusual peltate to subpeltate attachment that gives the blade a shield-like profile. The venation radiates outward from the petiole in a very structured way, creating a calm but botanically distinctive look that differs from marbled or pink-veined ornamental forms. The plant can climb or lean against a slim support and usually reaches around 40–80 cm indoors under stable conditions.
Bright, indirect light keeps the leaf contrast sharper without burning the surface, while an airy mix with bark, coir, perlite, and charcoal helps the roots stay moist but oxygenated. Humidity around 60–80% keeps the leaves broad and healthy.
This is a collector’s species for people who value unusual leaf architecture more than overt colour.
